metals with acid, water, and oxygen Flashcards
how do metals react with hydochloric acid
when a metal reacts with hydrochloric acid the products will be a solution of salt ( an x chloride ) and hydrogen gas.
hydrogen test
the pop test. collect gas by holding an empty test tube over the reaction tube, light a match, place it in the test tube containing the gas, and see if it makes a popping sound.
Hydrogen and oxygen react…
explosively. this is why it makes a popping noise, the product is water.
metals that don’t react with acid
copper, silver, gold
metal that reacts slowly to acid
lead
metals that react steadily to acid
zinc, iron
metal that reacts vigorously to acid
magnesium
(s) (g) (l) (aq) mean?
solid, gas, liquid, a substance dissolved in water
magnesium with oxygen
burns vigorously. forms a thin layer of magnesium oxide even when it isn’t heated.
zinc, iron and oxygen
zinc burns into sparks when heated, though not as vigorously as magnesium. iron burns slightly less vigorously.
lead, copper, and oxygen
does not burn when heated. but forms a layer of oxide on the surface
gold and oxygen
no reaction
