Why does water absorption happen with polymers?
A
B/c of weak secondary bonds in polymers, water molecules are able to penetrate b/w polymer chains

What is a stress raiser?
A
A phenomenon that occurs around any irregularity (defect in a material - as when a semicircular groove is placed across one side of the block.
The stresses at each point on the plane passing thru the groove would not be the same as the average stress.
Stress would be constant over most of the plane but would rise suddenly near the groove reaching a max at the edge of the groove
