Metals And Their Uses Flashcards
Metals in reactive order and their methods of extraction?
Potassium

Calcium
Magnesium
CARBON
Zinc
Iron Extracted by reaction
Tin carbon
Lead
HYDROGEN
Copper
Silver Extracted in many
Gold ways
Platinum
Properties of transition metals?
- Good conductors of heat and electricity
- Malleable
How is iron extracted?
Iron oxide + carbon -> iron + carbon dioxide
A blast furnace removes iron for iron ore in a blast furnace as carbon is more reactive than iron.
Properties of copper? Uses?
- Soft
- Easily bent
- Good conductor
Wiring, plumbing, pipes and tanks.
How is copper extracted?
By a furnace and then purified by electrolysis.
What is electrolysis?
Electricity is passed through solutions containing metal compounds. During electrolysis positively charged metal ions move towards the negative electrode and are deposited as pure metal.
What is phytomining?
Plants that can absorb metal compounds through their roots can be burned to produce an ash containing metal compounds.
What is bioleaching?
Bacteria that can absorb metal compound can produce leachates, which contain metal compounds.
Proprties of titanium and aluminum?
- low density
- corrosion resistant
Uses of aluminum?
- aircrafts
- trains
- saucepans
- cooling foil
Uses of titanium?
- fighter airplanes
- artificial hip joins
- pipes in nuclear power stations
How is titanium and aluminum extracted?
As they are more reactive than carbon they cant be extracted by it meaning ways to extract are expensive and include long process.
How does other atoms change the properties of iron?
Low carbon - easily shaped - car body
High carbon - hard - cutting tools
Stainless steel- resistant to corrosion- cutlery
