Metals and their reactivity Flashcards
1
Q
What is the reactivity series?
A
- Order of reactiveness toward other elements
2
Q
Why are carbon and hydrogen in the reactivity series?
A
- Metals less reactive than carbon can be extracted, more reactive cannot
- Metals more reactive than hydrogen react with acid, less reactive will not
3
Q
How is the speed of reaction indicated?
A
- By rate of bubbles given off
4
Q
What do metals reacting with acid tell you?
A
- More reactive: violent
- Less reactive: not so violent
5
Q
How else can you tell the reactivity of an element?
A
- How it reacts with water
6
Q
What is oxidation?
A
- Metals gain of oxygen
7
Q
What is extractive?
A
- Reduction, loss of oxygen
8
Q
In what way can you extract a compound?
A
- Reduction with carbon
- Electrolysis
9
Q
What is a reduction by carbon?
A
- Compound reacts with carbon, produces element + CO2
- Can be done if element is less reactive than carbon
2Fe2O3 + 3C –> 4Fe + 3CO2
