Define Ferrous Metals
Metals that contain iron (Fe) and are mostly magnetic
Define non-ferrous metals
Metals that do no contain iron (Fe) and are not magnetic
What is an alloy?
A combination of 2 or metallic elements
Where can you find a list of all the pure metals?
The Periodic Table of Elements
Define strength
The ability to withstand a force without breaking or bending permanently
Define hardness
The ability to withstand scratching, cutting or denting (surface wear)
Define toughness
The ability to withstand sudden shock without breaking or denting.
Define machinability
How easily a material can be shaped or cut
Define workability
How easy it is to change the shape of a material
Define durability
The ability to withstand wear, tear and weathering.
Define elasticity
The ability of a material to deform (change shape) then return to it’s original shape; a ramp that bends under the load of a car then springs back into shape.
What is compressive strength?
The ability to withstand a compression (squashing) force; the weight of a bridge pushing down on the supporting legs.
What is tensile strength?
The ability to withstand a tensile (stretching or tension) load; like the suspension cables on a bridge.

Properties associated with the structure of a material
Define mechanical properties
Properties associated with how a material reacts to external forces
