Metals And Reactivitiy Flashcards
When an atom loses or gains electrons to form a full outer shell of electrons
An ion
Chemical reaction
Reactants to a product
Why do the alkali metals reactivity increases going down the group
The atoms of each element get larger going down the group
Outer shell electron gets further away from the nucleus
The further the electrons is from positive nucleus the easier it’s lost in reactions
That’s why the reactivity if alkaline metals increases going down group 1
Two traits you see as you go down the alkali metals
Metals become softer
Reacts with air to form oxides
Sodium reaction with water
Fizzes more than lithium
The sodium melts into a metallic spherical ball bearing
The hydrogen sometimes catches fire
Lithium reaction with water
Least reactive of alkaline metals
Added to water it fizzes and movies around slowly
Potassium reaction with water
Moves around the water very quickly
Melts with heat reaction
Produces so much heat the hydrogen catches fire
Exothermic reaction def
A reaction that releases heat
Word equation for oxidation reaction between oxygen and alkali metal
Alkaline metal + oxygen ____. Alkali metal oxide

Displacement reactions
One metal is more reactive than the other metals it will displace it e.g
Iron +copper sulphate +++++ iron sulphate + copper
Iron displaces copper and takes the sulphate
Metals can be ordered by reactivity the table is called
The reactivity series
