Metals and ores Flashcards
What is an ore
A substance found in the earths crust containing metal atoms combined with other elements
Lost the reactivity series
Please - potassium Sell - sodium Calcium - calcium Metals - magnesium And - aluminium Zap - zinc Interesting - iron Trees - tin Love - lead Colourful - copper Silver - silver Glossy - gold Potatoes - platinum
How can metals be extracted from their ores
By chemical reactions or electrolysis
What is different about the metals like gold silver and platinum
Some are very unreactive and can be found uncombined with other elements
What happens when extracting metals from their ores as they have a greater reactivity
It gets more difficult as there is greater amount of energy needed
In the reactivity series what can a metal with a greater reactivity do to the one below
It can displace it by using a solution of one of its salts (magnesium can displace copper from a solution of copper sulphate forming magnesium sulphate)
Magnesium + copper sulphate ->
Copper + magnesium sulphate
What is reduction
It involves the removal of oxygen atoms from a chemical
What is oxidation
It involves the addition of oxygen atoms to a chemical
How is aluminium extracted from
It ore
Using electrolysis
How is iron extracted from it ore
Using a blast furnace
Explain how aluminium is extracted from its ore
Aluminium oxide is heated to high temperatures making it melt
This allows the positively charged aluminium ions to move towards the negatively charged cathode
This forms aluminium atoms that can be extracted as bulk aluminium metal
What are the steps of extracting iron ore using a blast furnace
This is likely to be a 6 mark qwc question fund source in book
What are the issues with extracting metals from their ores
Sitting of the plant (large area making a huge environmental impact) Fuel and energy costs Greenhouse gas emissions Impact on recycling Effects on extraction of the ores
