Metals and Non – Metals and the Reactivity Series Flashcards
describe the properties of metals
*lustrous (shiny)
*hard and strong
*high density
*malleable
*ductile
*good conductors of heat and electricity
*high melting and boiling points
*sonorous - they ring when hit
describe the properties of non-metals
- Dull
- Brittle
- Bad conductors
- Good insulators
what are non-metals oxides and what are metal oxides
non-metal oxides are acidic
metal oxides are basic

define an ore and give an example
Ores are naturally occurring rocks that contain metals or metal compounds in sufficient amounts to make it worthwhile extracting them
e.g. Chalcopyrite - copper ore
what are the different ways to extract metals from their ores
Metals above carbon can only be extracted by electrolysis. Electrolysis is using electricity to break down electrolytes to form elements. Electrolysis is expensive.
Metals less reactive than Carbon can be extracted by Metal Oxide Reduction with CO2 or Carbon. Reduction is when you displace the carbon with the other elements. Carbon is used as it is cheap.
Gold, Silver and Platinum are sometimes found pure and so do not need to be extracted.
what is the reaction of metal with oxygen, water and acid (each differently)
Metal + Oxygen –> Metal Oxide
Metal + Water –> Metal Hydroxide + Hydrogen
Metal + Acid –> Metal Salt + Hydrogen
what is the test for oxygen
light a splint
if there is oxygen, the flame will grow brighter
what is a displacement reaction
Displacement is when one element is replaced by another element in a compound, when a more reactive element replaces a less reactive element.
how do you write a displacement reaction’s word equation
Copper sulphate + Iron –> Iron sulphate + Copper
