Metals and non-metals Flashcards
Metal + oxygen ➡️
Metal oxide
Metal + water ➡️
Metal hydroxide + Hydrogen
Metal + acid ➡️
Salt + Hydrogen
Malleable
Able to be beaten/hammered or pressed into a sheet
Ductile
Able to be drawn into a wire
Lustre
Shiny when polished, able to reflect light from it’s surface
Displacement reaction
A metal and an ionic solution react spontaneously. The metal and metal ion swap (displace)
Spectator ion
Spectator ions are ions which, although they are present when a reaction happens do not take part in the reaction. They are not changed during the reaction.
Alloy
An alloy is a mixture of two or more elements in a solid, in which the major component is a metal. They are usually mixtures of metals eg. bronze, brass or a metal an non metals eg. steel
Allotrope
In some elements, the atoms can be arranged in different ways, and each of these physical forms will have quite different properties. Each of the different physical forms is called an allotrope.
