metals and alloys Flashcards
name some properties of metal in general
usually good conductors of heat electricity, a very high density
name some properties of low carbon steel
Malleable, inexpensive, rusts easily
name some properties of aluminium
durable, lightweight, resistant to corrosion
name some properties of stainless steel
tough, hard, resistant to corrosion
name some properties of copper
relatively soft, malleable and ductile
what do ferrous metals mean?
they contain iron and almost all ferrous metals have magnetic and unless treated rust
what does non-ferrous mean?
they don’t contain iron, they’re not magnetic
what are some differences between ferrous and non-ferrous metals?
ferrous metals are more stronger but less malleable and non-ferrous metals are generally more resistant and more expensive
what does alloy mean?
mixed with other metals four elements
what does a pure metal mean?
metals that only contain a single metal
what are some uses for low carbon steel?
car bodies nails and screws
what are some uses for aluminium?
drinks cans, aircraft and foil
what are some uses for copper?
electrical wiring, central heating pipes
what are some uses for stainless steel?
cutlery and surgical equipment
Where can metals be found
Metals can be extracted from their ores
