Metals, Alloys and Equilibrium Diagrams Flashcards
What Two groups can Metals be grouped in?
Ferrous Metals (Contains Iron)
Non-Ferrous Metals (No Iron)
Name 3 Properties of Ferrous Metals
Magnetic
High-Tensile Strength
Easy to Be Oxidised (Prone to Corrosion)
Steel, Cast Iron Ect.
Name 4 Properties of Non-Ferrous Metals
Non-Magnetic
Low-Tensile Strength
Resistant to Corrosion
High Strength-to-Weight ratio
Aluminium, Zinc , Titanium
What is an Alloy
Why are Alloys Used
Mixture of 2 or more Pure Metallic Elements
Pure Metals have Strength Properties and Flaw Properties, By combining metals together, strengths can remain while flaws are minimised.
eg. Pure Aluminium is rarely used because its soft, yet its got a High Strength to Weight Ratio . Aluminium Alloys Keep those Strengths while making the material less soft.
What do Composition Graphs Show
What must you consider before making a composition for a certain product
a graph how different mechanical properties change as the %Composition changes
Multiple Composition Graphs must be Constructed, and consulted prior to making a composition.
What are High Entropy Alloys (HEA) and Shape Memory Alloys (SMA)
What are the Benefits to Both
HEA :Alloys that are formed by mixing equal & large proportions of five or more elements.
increased strength-to-weight ratios
Higher fracture resistance
Enhanced tensile strength
Improved corrosion and oxidation resistance
SMA : Alloys that are able to return to a specific geometry when certain conditions are applied causing the material to enter a different phase.
ie. Nitonol
- Self Repairing Structures
What is a Phase
A distinct characteristic structure in which the Material can Exist. eg. Solid, Liquid , Gas
Changes in Conditions can cause phase changes.
What are Equilibrium/Phase Diagrams
what do the Lines Represent
Phase Diagrams are graphs that show what conditions of a material are within which distinct phase
Lines where the Phase changes, any point along boundary lines both phases either side of the boundary coexists in equilibrium
What is a Tripple Point
The Temperature and Pressure at which the Solid, Liquid, and Vapour phases can coexist in Equilibrium within a pure substance
What is the Liqidus Line?
What is the Solidus Line?
Describe what occurs at Points A, B C and D.
a 50% Copper Composition material is cooled at a constant rate, Draw a Graph for the Temperature against Time for the Cooling Process
Label the Total Solidification Time
For the Following Graph:
t= 1250 , c% = 35
What is the % of Nickel in the liquid Phase ?
What is the % of Nickel in the Solid Phase?
What is the Weight Fractions for Solid and Liquid?
