Metals & Acids Flashcards
Which acid is used to make sodium chloride?
Hydrochloric acid.
What are the names of the products made in the reaction between an acid and a metal?
Salt and Hydrogen.
What type of salts are made from the reaction of sulfuric acid?
Sulfate.
Nitrate salts are made from the reaction of which acid?
Nitric Acid.
What is the name of the salt formed from the reaction of magnesium and nitric acid?
Magnesium Nitrate.
What is the name of the salt formed from the reaction of zinc and hydrochloric acid?
Zinc Chloride.
What would we see if a sample of silver, gold or platinum is placed in acid?
No reaction.
What would we see if a sample of potassium or sodium is placed in acid?
Violent reaction.
What is the difference between “-ate” and “-ite”?
“-ate” is used for the ion that has the largest number of oxygen atoms. “-ite” is used for the ion that has the smallest. (e.g NO2 = nitrite. NO3 = nitrate.)
What are some of the most reactive metals?
Potassium, sodium and calcium.
What happens when potassium reacts with acid?
Produces an exothermic reaction involving release of flammable hydrogen gas.
What happens when sodium reacts with acid?
Hydrogen gas and sodium chloride are produced.
What happens when calcium reacts with acid?
Produces bubbles of hydrogen gas.
What are some of the least reactive acids?
Platinum, gold and silver.
