Metals Flashcards
Reactivity series for metals
Potassium Sodium Lithium Calcium Magnesium Aluminium Carbon zinc Iron tin Lead Hydrogen Copper Silver Gold Platinum
Displacement reaction theo is dumb
If a metal is more reactive than another one, it will displace the less reactive one, when they react
eg) zn + CuSo4–>znSo4 + Cu
The copper is displaced by the zinc because zinc is more reactive
Whats OILRIG
An oxidising agent oxidises something else.
Oxidation is loss of electrons (OIL).
That means that an oxidising agent takes electrons from that other substance.
So an oxidising agent must gain electrons.
A reducing agent reduces something else
Reduction is gain of electrons(RIG)
That means that an reducing agent gains electrons from the other substance
So a reducing agent must lose electrons
Conditions which iron rust
Iron and steel rust when water and oxygen is present
Barrier methods
You can paint the metal
You put zinc coating onto the iron or steel, Galvanising
you put a block of zinc near the iron or metal, sacrificial protection
