Metals Flashcards
metals consists mostly of iron (ex: steel)
Ferrous
contain little or no iron (ex: copper and aluminum)
Non-ferrous
process of forming a material into a particular shape by pouring it in a fluid state into a mold, and then letting it harden
Casting
Shapes are produced by forcing semi-molten material through a die with a pressure ram. Long linear shapes are produced.
Extrusion
Formed by hammering, pressing, or rolling metal into the desired configuration
Forging
Accomplished b y buffing, grinding, polishing, or otherwise texturing the metal surface for a specific appearance
Mechanical finishes
Involve the reaction of various solutions on the metal surface. These finishes may or may not have an effect on the performance of a metal surface.
Chemical finishes
are either materials applied to the metal or formed by the metal itself through a chemical or electrochemical process
Coatings
The reddish brittle coating formed on the surface of iron esp. when exposed to moisture and air
Rust
The process or result of combining oxygen to form an oxide
Oxidation
The process by which steel is coated with a layer of zinc
Galvanizing
commonly referred to as anodized finishes;
Electrolytic finishes
aluminum can be covered with a protective or decorative film or another metal usually by electrodesposition
Electroplating
This finish creates a different feeling in that colors are glassy
Porcelain or Vitreous Enamel
a malleable, ductile, magnetic, silver-white metallic element from which pig iron and steel are made
Iron
a hard, brittle, non-malleable iron-based alloy; contains the most carbon; hardest among all irons
Cast Iron
a tough, malleable, relatively soft iron that is readily forged and welded; contains the least amount of carbon
Wrought Iron
Crude iron that is drawn from a blast furnace and cast into pigs in preparation for conversion into cast iron, wrought iron, or steel
Pig Iron
An oblong mass of metal that has been poured while still molten into a mold of sand, esp. a mass of iron from a blast furnace
Pig
Any of various iron-based alloys having a carbon content less than that of cast iron and more than that of wrought iron; used as a structural material
Steel
an iron alloy that is corrosion resistant because of addition of chromium; popular use as column covers, railings, kitchen sinks, and fine eating utensils
Stainless Steel
Steel that has properties made up mostly of carbon
Carbon Steel
Steel that includes silicon, which allows the steel to minimize energy loss during electrical applications
Electrical Steel
To coat a metal esp. aluminum or magnesium, with a hard, noncorrosive film by electrolytic or chemical action
