Metals Flashcards
What is an ore?
Compounds From which metals can be extracted
What is smelting?
Using carbon To take oxygen from a metal oxide
Why can carbon displace iron in iron oxide?
Carbon is more reactive than iron
Why can’t carbon displace sodium from sodium oxide?
Sodium is more reactive than carbon
Why can we mine pure gold?
Because it isn’t very reactive
What are the properties of aluminium?
Light, Easily shaped, strong
What are the uses of aluminium?
Coke cans, aeroplanes and foil
What does malleable mean?
Easy to shape
What does ductile mean?
Easy to make into wires
Why are pure metals soft?
Atoms can slide off each other
Why are alloys hard?
Distort 3d arrangement of metal Harder to slide off
What is reduction?
Take oxygen out of a substance
What is oxidation?
Adding oxygen to a substance
What is electrolysis?
Splitting a compound up Into it’s elements Using electricity
Why do we use electrolysis?
Extract metals More reactive than carbon
