Metals Flashcards
How do you get metals from ores?
Reduction, electrolysis and displacement reactions.
How to reduce with carbon.
Metals less reactive than carbon can use this method. The products made are the metal and carbon dioxide.
Displacement Reactions.
Put a reactive metal into a less reactive dissolved metal compound. This will displace the less reactive metal.
What is bioleaching?
Putting bacteria in copper rich ground and they separate the copper from the ore. You then flush out the bacteria.
What is phytomining?
Growing plants on copper rich ground and then burning them to create copper rich ash.
Negatives of Metal Extraction.
Noisy
Destroys land
Loss of habitats
Mine shafts can remain dangerous.
What is an ore?
A rock which contains enough metal to make it worthwhile extracting the metal from it.
What are alloys?
A mixture of two different metals.
Bronze is a mixture of what?
Copper and tin
Cupronickel is a mixture of what?
Copper and nickel
Gold alloys are good for what and why?
Jewellery as pure gold is too soft.
Aluminium alloys are used for what and why?
Aircraft as aluminium is light but not strong
