Metals Flashcards
What is a ferrous metal?
A metal that contains mostly iron.
What is a non-ferrous metal?
Metals that do not contain iron; they are not magnetic and usually more resistant to corrosion than ferrous metals.
List the names of common metals.
- Silver
- Stainless steel
- Iron
- Brass
- Copper
- Pewter
Describe the properties and potential uses of iron.
- Cast iron is brittle and can snap, so is likely to break/shatter if dropped.
Cast iron might be used to make garden furniture, house numbers or vices.
Describe the properties and potential uses of stainless steel?
- Tough, and resistant to rust and stains.
- Does not corrode.
- Used for cutlery, medical instruments, pots and pans.
What is an alloy?
A metal is combined with other substances to improve its properties or characteristics.
Describe the properties and potential uses of aluminium?
- Ductile, soft, malleable, lightweight and resistant to corrosion.
- Used in aircraft, drinks cans and window frames.
Describe the properties and potential uses of copper.
- Ductile, can be beaten into shape as it is soft. It is a good electrical conductor.
- Therefore, often used in electrical wiring, tubing, kettles, pipes and plumbing.
Describe the properties and potential uses of brass.
- Conducts electricity, surface tarnishes slowly on contact with air. Resists corrosion. Golden colour.
- Electrical fittings, engineering, ornaments and musical instruments.
Describe the properties and potential uses of Pewter.
- Pewter is soft, malleable alloy that has a low melting point. As a result, suitable for casting.
- Used for making tankards and decorative pieces.
Name two methods of finishing a metal.
- Enameling
- Dip coating
