Metals Flashcards
What do we call metals found in the Earth and not in compounds?
Native Metals
What section of the periodic table do most metals live in?
Transition Metals
Define the word ‘ore’
An ore is the rock that you extract a metal from.
Which metal is more reactive? Calcium or Silver?
Calcium
List 2 ways in which limestone and products made from limestone are useful to the building industry
1) It is used to make cement
2) It is used to make concrete
3) We can made glass with limestone
What is limestone mainly made of?
Calcium carbonate
What would happen if you heated calcium carbonate?
It would decompose and make calcium oxide and carbon dioxide
What does carbon dioxide do to limewater?
Turns it cloudy
What happens in step one of the limestone cycle?
Calcium carbonate is heated to make calcium oxide, it also gives off carbon dioxide
What is step 2 in the limestone cycle?
Water is added to calcium oxide and it produces calcium hydroxide
What happens in step 3 on the limestone cycle?
Water is added to calcium hydroxide and filtered and it produced calcium hydroxide solution
What happens in step 4 of the limestone cycle?
Carbon dioxide is added to the calcium hydroxide solution to make calcium carbonate
How is concrete made?
Concrete is made by heating limestone with clay in a kiln
How is mortar made?
It is made by mixing cement and sand with water
How is concrete made?
Cement is made by mixing aggregate and cement sand and water
Why is titanium used to make planes?
It is used to make planes because it resists corrosion and have low densities compared to other metals
How can copper be purified?
Electrolysis
Name some new ways to extract copper from low grade ores
Bio Leaching and photo mining
Where in the periodic table are the transition metals found?
in the central block
What is the main compound in crude oil?
Hydrocarbons
What are Alkanes?
Saturated hydrocarbons, they contain as much hydrogen atoms as possible in their molecule
What process do we use to separate crude oil?
Fractional distillation
