Metals Flashcards
Typical properties of non metals
Low melting points, solids, liquids, gases, does not conduct (exception carbon), brittle
Typical properties of metals
High melting points, solids (exception mercury), conduct heat and electricty, malleable, hard and dense (exception Alkalis), ductile, sonarous
Define corrosion
Undesirable process where a metal changes to it’s oxide by combining with oxygen in the air
Define rusting
The corrosion or iron when exposed to water and oxygen
Define an alloy
A mixture of two or more metals
Examples of alloys
Brass (copper and zinc)
Bronze (copper and tin)
Mild steel (iron and carbon)
Stainless steel (iron and chromium and nickel)
Prevention of corrosion
Painting
Coating with tin/plastic/grease/oil
Galvanising (coating with zinc)
