metals 2 Flashcards
what is heat treatment of steel?
when steel in heat to resolve its crystal structure and grains
what are the 6 heat treatment methods?
Full annealing Normalising Process annealing Hardening Quenching Tempering
what is full annealing?
when steel is heated to gamma and cooled slowly
what is normalising?
when steel is heated to gamma and cooled in the air (quick)
what is quenching?
when steel is heated to gamma and cooled in water or oil
what is tempering?
after quenching the steel is reheated
what is work hardening?
when steel is loaded until it reaches its yield point, the low is then taken off and then it reloaded again ( 2nd yield point is higher)
what is produced after quenching?
martensite
what are the different types of iron, and how carbon do they contain?
pig iron- 3.5-4.5%
wrought iron- 0.02-0.25%
cast iron- 2-5%
molten iron- (melted pig iron)
what are carbon steel and alloy steel?
carbon steel- contains steel and carbon
alloy steel- contains steel, carbon and other impurities
describe the process of manufacturing iron?
take raw iron (iron oxide) from ironstone
melt to 1535 degree
add coke (to produce carbon)
add limestone (to remove impurities)
describe the process of manufacturing cast iron?
molten iron from furnace poured into moulds
describe the process of manufacturing wrought iron?
reheating pig iron at 800-900 degrees and hammering and folding it repeatedly
describe the process of manufacturing steel?
iron oxide+ coke+ limestone+ pure air/ oxygen
what are the three categories of steel shapes?
slabs, blooms and billets
