Metals Flashcards
1
Q
What is an Alloy?
A
A metal made of two or more metals (a combination) that does not contain iron and doesn’t rust
2
Q
Name Non Ferrous Alloys
A
- Aluminium
- Copper
- Zinc
- Titanium
- Steel
3
Q
Describe the features of non ferrous alloys
A
- Corrosion resistant and do not rust
- Lightweight
- malleable and ductile
- good electrical conductivity
- Lighter than ferrous metals
- Made of two or more metals combined
4
Q
Non ferrous alloy
A
- Do not contain iron
- Non ferrous alloys hold a distinct an irreplaceable role in multiple sectors, this is due to their defining characteristics, being resistant to corrosion, lightweight and their thermal conductivity makes them the material of choice in certain applications
5
Q
Describe an example of a Ferrous Alloy
A
- Stainless steel contains iron and the addition of Chromium provides corrosion resistance
Stainless steel is an alloy of Chromium and Nickel, it is widely used in cutlery as its resistant to corrosion, lightweight and resistant to stains and scratches
6
Q
Ferrous Alloy
A
- A combination of two or more metals, containing iron, carbon and one other element
- Contains iron
7
Q
List the Ferrous Alloys
A
- Stainless steel
- Die steel
- Carbon steel
- Cast Iron
8
Q
Describe malleability
A
- The ability of a metal to be reshaped under compressive strength without breaking or cracking
- This enables metals to be rolled, pressed or hammered into thin sheets or various shapes
9
Q
Is metal renewable?
A
- Metal is a non-renewable material which cannot be naturally replaced over a short period of time. Once used there therefore there will be no more available.
- Most metal is infinitely recyclable and can be melted down and formed into new products prolonging its life.
10
Q
What is wasting of metal?
A
Wasting of metal refers to the degradation of metal or the loss due to various factors such as corrosion, erosion, wear or tear over time, this leads to weakening or deterioration of the metal object.
11
Q
Metal finishes
A
- Coating
- Polishing
- Grinding to create a smooth surface
- Finishes improve aesthetics and durability
12
Q
Steel and Stainless steel
A
- Steel is a Ferrous alloy and contains iron therefore it does not require a finish because it won’t rust
- Steel is a non ferrous alloy and does not contain iron therefore it requires a finish to prevent corrosion
