Metals Flashcards
Give two ways elements can be classified
Metals and non-metals
What is an element?
Substance made from same types of atoms
Give the physical properties of metals
Hard, strong, shiny, good heat conductors, good electrical conductors, high density, malleable, ductile, sonorous
What are the 3 magnetic metals?
Iron, nickel, cobalt
Give the chemical properties of metals
Oxidation, react with acids, react with water
What is fractional distillation?
Process used to separate liquids through boiling, condensation and collection
What is crude oil?
Dark, viscous liquid made up of hydrocarbons of different chain length
Name the steps in a fractional column
Crude oil is vaporised at bottom, vapor rises through column and cools until it condenses, liquids are then released at different points
Name the reactivity series
Potassium
Sodium
Calcium
Magnesium
Aluminium
Zinc
Iron
Tin
Lead
Copper
Silver
Gold
Platinum
Where are transition metals found in the periodic table?
The middle
Where are alkalis found in the periodic table?
On the right side
What does metal make after reacting with an acid?
Salt and hydrogen
What does a metal and acid react to make?
Salt and hydrogen
What does a metal and oxygen form to make?
Metal oxide
