Metals Flashcards
What are ferrous metals
all contain iron ferrite and have high tensile strength and durability
Properties of cast iron
Hard but brittle. Resists deformation and rust.
Properties of low carbon/mild steel
Tough and ductile. Rusts easily if not protected
Properties of high carbon steel
Hard, but brittle. Hard wearing, resists abrasion and retains its shape
Uses of cast iron
Kitchen pans, machine bases, manhole covers
Uses of low carbon steel/mild steel
Car bodies, steel building frames, pipelines.
Uses of high carbon steel
Tools, blades, scissors
What are non ferrous metals
A group of pure metals and do not contain iron
Examples of non ferrous metals
Zinc, copper, tin, aluminium
Examples of ferrous metals
Cast iron, low carbon/mild steel, high carbon steel
Properties of zinc
brittle, yet malleable. High corrosion resistance
Properties of copper
Ductile and malleable. Good electrical conductor
Properties of tin
Malleable and ductile, high corrosin resistance. Good electrical conductor
Properties of aluminium
Lightweight, ductile, resists corrosion
Uses of zinc
To galvanise steel
