Metals Flashcards
Hardness
the ability to resist abrasion, penetration, cutting or permanent distortion
Strength
the ability to resit deformation or breakage due to stress
density
the weight of a substance per unit volume
Malleability
the ability to be hammered or rolled into a shape
ductility
the ability for metal to be permanently drawn, bent, or twisted into various shapes
elasticity
the ability for metal to return to its original size and shape when the force that causes the change of shape is removed
Brittleness
this is the property of metal that allows little bending or deformation without shattering
Fusibility
the ability of a metal to become liquid by the application of heat
Conductivity
property that enables a metal to carry heat or electricity. Especially important in welding
Thermal Expansion
refers to contraction and expansion that are reactions produced in metals as the result of heating or cooling
Ferrous Metals
a group of metals having iron has their main component
Cast Iron
iron that is melted and poured into a mold that takes the shape of the mold. it is brittle hard and non-malleable
Wrought Iron
iron that is heated and worked upon with some tools to give it a decorative design
Steel
contains UP TO 2 % carbon. Higher carbon content makes a hard steel
