Metals Flashcards
What are the properties of metals?
Good conductor of electricity & heat
Shiny
High density
Malleable (hammer it into different shapes)
Describe the reaction of group 1 metals and water
Group 1 metals react vigorously with water and they all make soluble hydroxides and hydrogen gas
What is the equation for potassium reacting with water?
Potassium + water = Potassium hydroxide + hydrogen
What is the reaction of metals and steam?
More reactive metals reacts quicker with steam (e.g. Magnesium, zinc & iron)
What is the word equations for metal and steam?
Magnesium + water = magnesium oxide + hydrogen
Describe the reaction of metals and oxygen?
The substances combines with oxygen which is an oxidation reaction
What is the word equation for zinc & oxygen
zinc + oxygen = zinc oxide
Describe the reaction of metals and acids?
The mixture bubbles vigorously, the magnesium ribbon seems to get smaller, and disappear.
What is reaction of lead & acid
lead + hydrochloride acid = lead chloride + hydrogen
How do you use a displacement reaction to decide a metal’s reactivity?
A more reactive element displaces, the less reactive element from its compound
What is the reaction of zinc & copper oxide
Zinc + copper oxide = zinc oxide + copper (zinc is higher than copper in the reactivity series)
What is the outcome of a displacement reaction
The less reactive element is now pure and left uncombined
What is rusting?
Rusting is the chemical reaction is when iron reacts with oxygen and moisture in the air to form hydrated Iron (III) oxide
What are the ways of preventing rust?
Paint
oil & greases
Tin plating
plastic coating
