Metals Flashcards
Difference between ferrous and non ferrous
Ferrous: contain iron
Non: Doesn’t contain iron, this makes them malleable and resistant to corrosion.
Ferrous: magnetic
Non: not magnetic. This makes it good for electronic devices and wiring
Ferrous: harder than non ferrous.
Name 3 ferrous metals
Cast iron, low carbon steel, high carbon steel.
Name 3 non ferrous metals
Aluminium, copper, zinc.
What is an alloy?
It is a metal formed by mixing together two or more metals to produce a new natal that improved characteristics and properties.
Aluminium
Name, composition, properties, uses
Aluminium, pure metal, greyish white and malleable, aircraft and boats.
Copper
Name, composition, properties, uses
Copper, pure metal, good heat and conductivity and resistance, wiring and motors.
Cast iron
Name, composition, properties, uses
Cast iron, pure metal, low cost and corrosion and resistance, pipes and ship anchor.
Zinc
Name, composition, properties, uses
Zinc, alloy, blush white and conductor, aluminium and solder.
Tin
Name, composition, properties, uses
Tin, pure metal, soft and pliable, cans and coat other material.
