> Metals consist of a …

>Metalic Bonds involve ‘ … ‘ which produce all the properties of atoms which come from?

A

> Giant structure.
‘ FREE ELECTRONS ‘
These delocalised electrons ( free electrons ) come from the outer shell of every metal atom in the structure.

Q

What are Delocalised Electrons?

A

Electrons which are FREE TO MOVE through the whole structure so metals are GOOD CONDUCTORS of HEAT and ELECTRICITY.

Q

> What do Delocalised Electrons do?

>How do they do this?

A

> Electrons hold the atoms together in a regular structure.

>They do this because there is a strong ELECTROSTATIC force between the POSITIVE metal ions and the NEGATIVE electrons.

Q

Delocalised Electrons have a regular structure and a strong force of electrostatic attraction. This allows them to do what?

A

Due to a regular structure and a strong electrostatic force the layers of atoms are able to slide over eachother allowing metals to be BENT and SHAPED

Q

What is an Alloy?

A

Alloys are a mixture of two or more metals together. This means that they will have the properties desired.

Q

What happens to elements when different metals are mixed?

A

When metals are mixed the new metal atoms wil distort the layers of metal atoms, making it MORE DIFFICULT for atoms to SLIDE OVER EACHOTHER

!!THIS MAKES ALLOYS HARDER!!
