Metallic bonding and alloys Flashcards
What is an alloy
A mix of elements one or more being metal
Why are alloys used
To make soft metals stronger
What is metallic bonding
Metal being very strongly bonded together due to delocalised electrons
Why do metals have high melting and boiling points
They have strong metallic bonding so it takes a lot of energy to melt
Which is softer pure metal or an alloy
Pure metals (usually)
What does delocalised electrons mean
Electrons from the outer shell can move freely through the whole structure of metal
What are many alloys made of
2 or more metals combined
What are many alloys made of
2 or more metals combined
How do we know how hard a metal is
When force is applied to metals atoms slide over each other the greater the force needed the harder the metal
Why are metals good conductors or electricity and heat
The delocalised electrons transfer energy
