Metallic Bonding Flashcards
What does it mean when it says that metals have low ionization energies?
The valence electrons of the metals can be delocalized.
What effect does an increase in charge have on melting point?
The higher the charge, the higher the melting point.
Define lattice.
A regular repeating structure.
Define metallic bonding.
The electrostatic attraction between a lattice of positive ions and delocalised electrons.
Factors that affect the strength of a metallic bond.
Increases the more valence electrons there are.
The more charge there is the more it increases.
The strength decreases when the ionic radius is larger.
What is a metal ion?
A cation.
Why are metals malleable?
The metallic bonds are non-directional and so the cations can slide past each other which leads to a rearrangement.
What are alloys?
A mixture of metals.
Why are alloys useful?
Disrupt the regularity as the atoms are different sizes. (makes it stronger)
Example of an alloy.
Steel.
