Metallic Bonding Flashcards
How many atoms in metals arranged?
Atoms and metals are built up layer upon layer in a regular pattern. They are another example of a giant structure.
What is metallic bonding?
Positively charged metal ions which are held together by electrons from the outer shell of each metal atom
Describe metallic bonding
Electrostatic attraction between the negatively charged electrons and positively charged ions bond the metal ions to each other. The delocalized electrons are free to move throughout the giant metallic lattice, they form a sea of free electrons
Why do metals have a high melting and boiling point?
Because of the giant structure of atoms with a strong metallic bonding
Why are metals malleable and ductile?
Because the layers of atoms or ions in a giant metallic structure can slide over each other
What is an alloy?
A metal mixed with other elements. They are made from two or more different metals.
