Metallic bonding Flashcards
What are the forces in a Giant Metallic Lattice?
Strong electrostatic forces of attraction between positive ions and delocalized electrons
What are the forces in a Giant Ionic Lattice?
Strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions
What are the properties of metals?
-Shiny
-Malleable and ductile
-High melting points
-Good conductors of heat and electricty
What are the properties of non-metals?
-Dull
-Brittle
-Usually low melting points
-Poor conductors of heat and electricity
Why are metals malleable and ductile?
Because the layers of ions can slide over each other
What happens when a group 1 metal is dropped into water?
-Effervescence
-Metal floats and moves across the surface of water
-Metal eventually disappears
What additional reaction happens when potassium is dropped into water?
A lilac flame is produced
What is the relative reactivity of lithium vs potassium?
-Potassium is more reactive
-More shells of electrons
-Weaker attraction to its outer electrons
-So it can lose them more easily
Explain what you would see when a piece of sodium is exposed to air
Its shine would fade and it would turn dull gray
