Metallic Flashcards
Definition of metallic bonding
Lattice/giant structure of positive ions surrounded by a sea of delocalised electrons– Attraction- strong electrostatic forces
Examples of metallic elements
Fe, Al, Mg, Ca
Electrical conductivity metallic
Delocalised electrons are free to move throughout the structure allowing metals to carry charge and conduct electricity.
Malleability/ ductile metallic
Malleable (easily beaten into shape), ductile (easily pulled into wires) - the regular packing makes it simple for the atoms to slide over each other
What is an electric current?
A flow of electrons or ions
Melting and boiling points of metallic
Quite high– due to strong electrostatic forces of attraction between ions and electrons which require lots of energy to break
Solubility in water metallic
Insoluble
