implicit emotion or associated concepts attached to a word or phrase
metaphor
non literal comparison of two things where one thing is said to be the other
simile
non literal comparison of two things where one thing is said to be alike to another, often using like or as
personification
non literal application of human characteristics to something non human, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form
symbolism
figurative technique of giving non literal abstract meaning to a concrete item
tone
overall feeling of a text, affected by the author’s attitude and conveyed through diction (look for tone shifts)
alliteration
repetition of particular sounds within words. connections of meaning through connection of sound. alliteration is repeating the initial consonant sound.
assonance
repetition of particular sounds within words. connections of meaning through connection of sound. assonance is repeating the vowel sound.
siblance
repetition of particular sounds within words. connections of meaning through connection of sound. siblance is repeating the fricative consonant sound to create hissing sound often through ‘s’ and ‘sh’
enjambment
when sentences flow on from one line to the next
caesura
when a sentence stops in the middle of a line
end stopping
when a sentence finishes at the end of the line
punctuation
use of full stops, commas, question marks, colons, semicolons, exclamation marks, speech marks, dashes and brackets. creates tone and emotion
rhyme and rhythm
repetition of similar sounding syllables often at the end of a line, used to create an echo effect. creates rhythm which can establish tone
stanzas and lines
a stanza is a collection of lines seperated by an indentation or blank line. length is measured by the number of lines. (consider length and regularity)
