Phrase
A single word or group of words that are related to each other, and form a single structural unit that conveys meaning.
Clause
A set of phrases that must contain a subject and a predicate.
Sentence
A means to convey thought, ideas, or statements of fact.
Syntax
The study of phrases, clauses, and sentences.
Simple Sentence
A sentence that only contains 1 main clause.
Compound Sentence
A sentence that contains two or more main clauses, joined by a coordinating conjunction.
Compound-Complex Sentence
A sentence that contains a main and 2 or more subordinate clauses, using both forms of conjunctions.
Complex Sentence
A sentence with a main clause and a subordinate clause, joined by a subordinating conjunction.
Sentence Fragment
An incomplete sentence, missing a subject or a predicate, but still making sense.
Ellipses
The use of …. within a sentence.
Clause Structure
Subject - Verb - Compliment - Adverbial
Active Voice
A sentence where the subject of the verb performs the action.
Passive Voice
A sentence where the subject of the verb receives the action.
Agentless Passive Sentence
A passive sentence where the subject/agent is omitted.
Declarative
A sentence whose purpose is to rely information.
