Lexeme
A word
Open Class Words
Word classes that often change and have new additions
Closed Class Words
Word classes that rarely change or have no new additions
Noun
A lexeme referring to a person, a place, or a thing
Proper Noun
A lexeme that is the name, often using a capitol letter
Verb
An action
Auxiliary Verbs
A type of verb that helps to express the tense of an action
Modal Verbs
A type of verb that shows a ‘force’, e.g. must, should, would, might
Adjective
A lexeme that describes/adds detail to a noun
Adverb
A lexeme that describes how an action (verb) is done
Interjection
A lexeme that is used to express an emotion
Determiner
A lexeme that specifics the number, definiteness or ownership of a noun
Pronoun
A lexeme that is used to replace a noun
Conjuction
A word that joins clauses together
Coordinating Conjunction
A conjunction that joins two main clauses together
Subordinating Conjunction
A conjunction that joins a main and a subordinate clause together
Preposition
A word that indicates time, place, direction or location
Word Formation Processes
The methods in which words are changed or created
Blend
Two words blended together over a shared syllable/phoneme
Acronym
A series of letters that are pronounced like a word
Initialism
A series of letters that are sounded out letter by letter
Shortening
The removal of parts of a word to make it shorter
Compounding
Joining two free lexemes together to make a new word
Contraction
Joining two words together with an apostrophe
Collocation
Words that commonly appear together
Neologism
New words
Archaism
Words that have faded out of usage, very uncommon
Borrowing
A lexeme taken from another language
Commonisation
Proper nouns that turn into common nouns
