Metal Structures Flashcards
What produces all the properties of metals?
The free electrons caused by metallic bonds
What do we call free electrons?
Delocalised
What do the free electrons make the metal a good conductor of?
Heat and electricity
What is the strong force between positive metal ions and negative electrons which allow the atoms to be held in a regular structure?
Electrostatic attraction
What is an alloy?
A mix of two or more metals in order to enhance the property of the metal
Why is an alloy harder than a pure metal?
Because he different sized atoms cause the regular layers of the alloy to be distorted meaning that it requires more effort for them to be pushed over each other
How are metals layed out?
Giant structures
