Metal Processes Flashcards
1
Q
Work hardening
A
-when a non-ferrous metal is continuously bent, hit, or shaped over a period of time
-desirable when shaping copper pipes
-causes splitting and snapping
2
Q
Annealing
A
-Annealing involves heating steel to a specified temperature and then cooling at a very slow and controlled rate
-It increases its ductility and reduce its hardness, making it more workable
3
Q
Tempering
A
-Tempering involves heating the metal to a precise temperature below the critical point
-often done in an air vacuum
-used to increase the toughness of iron-based alloys
4
Q
Case hardening
A
-hardens the surface of a metal object while allowing the metal deeper underneath to remain soft
-thin layer of harder metal at the surface
