Q

Describe the rolling process

A

rollers are used to put pressure on a long billet of metal to reduce its cross sectional area and to change its shape

Q

What is the difference between hot and cold rolling?

A

in hot rolling the billet is heated to be more complient but causes recystalization and the introduction of impurities which makes cold rolled metal stonger with a better finish

Q

Describe extrusion forming

A

Extrusion involves forcing a metal billet through a die to produce a
continuous length with a consistent cross-section

9
Q

What is the difference between forward, reverse and combination extrusion forming?

A

Forward: metal billet is forced through an die to form a part

Reverse: billet is forced into a solid die cause it be pushed backwards up out of the die

combinational pushes metals in both directions

Q

Describe closed die forging (5 stages)

A

1.Preform: a rough shape of the overall dimensions is made so the billet fits in the dies

2.First Impression: The primary metal movements creating simple shapes with large radii

3.Second Impression: Subsequent impressions refine the details of the
forging.

4.Final Impression: Excess material, , is squeezed out fromthe gaps between the top and bottom dies.

5.Trimming: flash is sheared off

Q

What are draft angles?

A

Angles built into the design of a part so that it can easily be removed from a die or mould

13
Q

What are the three types of presses used in forging?

A

Drop/falling hammer: energy of a falling pressure provides force

Hydraulic: high pressure is used to force the press

Screw press: rotating shaft with a piston provides force, energy is stored in flywheels

14
Q

How is forging force determined?

A

F=nAY
F= force
n = factor from 2 -> 10 dependant of shape complexity
A = plan area of the forging including flash
Y = flow stress at the preheat temperature

16
Q

What is Punching/blanking?

A

cutting and deforming of a work piece using a punch and a die to cut specific shapes out of sheet metal

17
Q

What is bending?

A

sheet metal is formed over an angled die into a curved shape.

18
Q

What is spring back?

A

when the elasticity of bend components allows it to slightly return twords its original shape meaning it does not match the die it is formed around

19
Q

describe deep drawing

A

Deep-drawing involves the production of a cup-like shape . A blankholder exerts
the pressure on the sheet metal to facilitate its flow between the
die and punch.

20
Q

Describe spinning

A

In the spinning process, the workpiece is secured between a rotating
mandrel and a tailstock. As the metal disk (workpiece), mandrel, and
tailstock rotate, a rolling tool exerts force while moving over the
workpiece.

21
Q

What is dynamic recystalization and what factors affect it?

A

during a hot plastic forming process the grain structure is shifted and reformed to flow through the material.
it is affected by Temperature, Deformation rate and Strain

22
Q

What factors affect Formability?

A

Ductility, Temperature, Friction between die and workpiece, Shape and form quality
