Metacognition, Type 1 & Type 2 error Flashcards

1
Q

What is metacognition?

A

an awareness of one’s thought processes and an understanding of the patterns behind them

Enables self-regulated learners to choose the best way to approach a learning task.

Includes the ability to know when, why, & how to apply different cognitive strategies to solve different types of problems.

Q

What is the clinical importance of metacognition?

A

The ability to transfer knowledge & skill to patient care is often inefficient.

Reflection is a metacognitive process- it can help practitioners develop better confidence by improving strategies upon which to make decisions.

Allows self-regulation, which is the ability to skillfully plan & implement activities in the clinic & use clinical time appropriately
- Self-regulation, or knowing what you do know helps prevent over-confidence.

allows clinicians to identify limitations in the quality of information obtained, inconsistencies or unexpected findings

enables them to monitor their reasoning

can assist practitioners in reducing errors

Q

What is type 1 error?

A

known as a false positive

occurs when researcher incorrectly rejects a true null hypothesis.

Means you report that findings are significant when in fact they have occurred by chance.

Q

What is type 2 error?

A

Known as false negative

occurs when researcher fails to reject a null hypothesis which is really false.

Researcher concludes there is not a significant effect, when actually there really is.

Q

Examples of type 1 & type 2 errors in medicine?

A

You decide to get tested for COVID-19 based on mild symptoms. There are two errors that could potentially occur:

  • Type I Error (False Positive):The test result says you have coronavirus, but you actually don’t.
  • Type II Error (False Negative):The test result says you don’t have coronavirus, but you actually do.

Pregnancy test

  • Type 1 error- your pregnant but the patient is a man
  • Type 2 error- your not pregnant but the patient is a women with a visible pregnant belly
