Metabolism and energy Flashcards
What are the two ways that energy is obtained in animals?
The first is the oxidation of food by respiration, the second is the chemical energy obtained by anaerobic respiration
name three ways energy is stored in an animals body and the relative time it is stored for
Lipids (long term) , Glycogen (medium term) and ATP (short term)
Name 5 reasons why metabolism can vary widely ?
Activity Excretion Digestion Thermoregulation Reproduction
What is the BMR ?
BMR is thr basal metablolic rate. This is the minimum rate of metabolism in animals when they are just ticking over..
What are the 3 ways of measuring BMR ?
- Measure the energy value of food consumed minus the energy value of food excreted
- Measring the total heat production
- Measuring the total oxygen consumption (RQ is the rate of o2 consumed and CO2 expelled)
How is oxygen consumption per unit of body mass related ?
As the body mass of an animal increases the overall oxygen consumption increases. However when observing per unit of body mass, oxygen consumption decreases. When transformed logarithmically it produces a decreasing straight line.
What is the formula relating to a straight line for calculating the oxygen consumption ?
LogO2cons = 0.75log body mass + log 3.8.
