Metabolism Flashcards
what is a metabolome?
all the metabolites in a cell or system
what are catabolic pathways?
Transform fuels into cell energy eg ATP, NADH, NADPH, FADH2
what are anabolic pathways?
Require cell energy eg ATP ,NADH, NADPH, FADH2 to synthesize diverse macromolecules from small precursor molecules
what are the diseases caused by metabolic deformities?
diabetes, cancer, neurodegeneration, heart disease, infection, inflammation and immunological dysfunction
what is bioenergetics?
quantitative study of energy transductions in living cells/organisms/systems
what is the thermodynamic equation for the change in free energy?
dG’0= -nFdE0
what are the 4 ways electrons are transferred in metabolism?
- directly
- as hydride ions (H-)
- as hydrogen ions (H+ and e-)
- by direct combination or organic reductants with O2
what is the terminal electron acceptor?
oxygen
