Metabolism Flashcards
Beta oxidation
Breaking down triacylglycerol into subunits of 2 C’s each (acetyl CoA)
- Provides energy for Krebs cycle
Fermentation
Partial breakdown of sugars and other nutrients using e- acceptor other than oxygen
- Fuel source is partly oxidized
How many electrons can NADH hold?
2 (same as FADH2)
How much energy can NADH and FADH2 hold?
NADH = 3ATP FADH2 = 2 ATP
What happens to glucose in cellular respiration?
oxidized or reduced
Glucose carbon is oxidized b/c loses e- from becoming CO2 and being bonded now to O2 (electronegative)
What kind of process is glucose oxidation?
What is the chemical reaction?
C6H12O6 + 6O2 => 6H2O + 6CO2
Combustion
What do dehydrogenases do?
Take away H+ and 2 electrons
Is glycolysis anabolic or catabolic?
Is gluconeogenesis anabolic or catabolic?
Glycolysis = catabolic
- Breakdown of glucose => makes ATP
Gluconeogenesis = anabolic
- Building glucose => needs ATP
