Metabolism Flashcards
1
Q
What is the limiting reagent in ethanol metabolism?
A
NAD+
2
Q
What inhibits alcohol or acetaldehyde dehydrogenase? Indications for use?
A
Alcohol dehydrogenase inhibited by fomepizole
-antidote for ethylene glycol/methanol poisoning
Acetaldehyde dehydrogenase inhibited by disulfiram (Antabuse) –> accumulation of acetaldehyde leads to hangover sx–> prescribed to recovering alcoholics
3
Q
Etiology and consequences of ethanol hypoglycemia?
A
- more EtOH metabolism –> increased NADH/NAD+ ratio
- no free NAD+ for lactate to pyruvate conversion, or G3P to DHAP conversion, or malate to oxaloacetate conversion
- lactic acidosis, fatty liver (more G3P –> TG synthesis)
