Metabolism Flashcards
Metabolism
How cells use energy to build, break apart, store and release substances in a controlled manner
What r the 2 types of reactions in metabolism
Catabolism & Anabolism
Catabolism
Breakdown of complex molecules into simpler ones; releasing energy in the process
Anabolism
Consume energy to build complicated molecules from simpler ones
Thermodynamics
Balancing energy that is transferred between molecules (input, output)
1st law
Energy in the universe is constant; cannot be made or destroyed
2nd law
Energy transformations are inefficient; they increase the entropy of universe (changes quality not quantity)
Energy
Capacity to do work
What type of energy do your cells need to do work ?
ATP- glucose/food
What does ATP consist of
Sugar, base, 3 phosphate groups
Phosphorylation
The chemical attachment of phosphorus to another molecule
Substrate level phosphorylation
Transfer of a phosphate group to ADP, forming ATP
Oxidative phosphorylation
ATP production from the transfer of electrons in electron transport chain
3 classes of work that need ATP
-mechanical energy
-transport work
-chemical work
Mechanical work
Contraction of muscle cell, beating of flagellum
