Metabolism Flashcards
Anabolic
Requires energy and synthesises complex molecules from simple ones
Catabolic pathway
Releases energy and involves the breakdown of molecules
Oxidative catabolism of glucose
The use of 6 oxygens to break glucose down into CO2 and H2O
What is the purpose of glucose catabolism?
1) The production of ATP
2) The production of intermediates and material for other metabolic pathways
Oxidative metabolism
Oxygen is used to make energy from energy from carbohydrates
What is the standard free energy change for glucose catabolism?
-2834kJmol-1
Delta G°´ definition
The change in Gibbs free energy at pH 7 under standard condition
Delta G° definition
The change in Gibbs free energy at pH 0
What is Gibbs free energy change
This is the combined value of enthalpy and entropy; this way free energy can be tracked during a chemical reaction.
If delta G°´ is negative…
free energy is released and the reaction is exergonic
If delta G°´ is positive…
free energy is absorbed and the reaction is endergonic
ΔGo = -RT ln K
What is this used for?
To predict if a reaction happens spontaneously or not, if K is known;
To estimate if the reaction lies to the left or right, if ΔGo in known.
What does Q stand for?
[Products]/[Reactants]
Where does the equilibrium lie if delta G is negative?
If large and negative it lies in favour of the product and is irreversible
Where does the equilibrium lie if delta G is positive?
If large and positive it lies in favour of the reactants and will not proceed
