Metabolism Flashcards
What Is The Comparison between Photosynthesis and cellular respiration?
Trough photosynthesis plants, algae, and bacteria convert light energy into chemical energy. Trough cellular respiration some organism convert chemical energy into other forms of energy, trapped inside of food, used for reproduction, movement and synthesis
What is metabolism? What Happens with it?
Metabolism is the totality of the reactions occurring in living organisms, by which energy is transferred and transformed from one form into another
Who and what is the energy currency of a cell?
The energy currency currency of a cell is ATP
Traduzione di Adenosine triphosphate
Adenosintrisosfato
From who ATP is formed?
ATP is formed by ribose(a five carbon sugar), from adenine(a nitrogenous base), from three phosphate groups
How are the bonds between the three phosphate groups?(energy)
They are high-energy, they release large amount of energy when broken down
How is the energy made from breaking up the bonds between the phosphate groups used?
It is used to convert ATP to ADP. Then when this happens, the energy is used to carry out ENDERGONIC REACTIONS
What are red ox reactions?
They are reactions trough which one substance transfers one or more electrons to another one. The ones that “loses” molecules is oxidized, whereas the atom that accepts electrons is reduced. ALWAYS IN PAIRS
What are metabolic pathways?Domino
Metabolic pathways refer to the sequence of enzyme-catalyzed reactions that lead to the conversion of a substance into a final product
What are NDP+ and NADP+?(batterie)
They Are crucial energy intermediaries since they work as electron carriers in redox reactions
In how many forms NAD+ & NADP+ exists?
Oxidized form and reduced form + or H
What is the purpose behind metabolic pathways?CRM
Their purpose is organising all the metabolic reactions
Talking about catalysation, what happens to each reaction
Each is catalysed by a different enzyme
How do enzymes act? What happens thanks to their activation?Leaders
They act as catalysts, they speed up the rate of the reaction. Thanks to their activation, reactions are turned on and off or sped up and slowed down. DEPENDING ON THE IMMEDIATE NEEDS AND OVERALL FUNCTION OF THE CELL
Where do metabolic pathways take place inside of a cell?
Glycolysis, takes place in the cytoplasm, whereas the citric acid cycle and electron transport, which complete the glucose degradation, take place in the mitochondria
