Metabolism Flashcards
Hypoglycemia s/s
cool and clammy, need some candy.
shakiness, anxiety, tachycardia, sweating, dizziness, hunger
Hyperglycemia s/s
polydipsia (thirst), polyuria (urination), polyphagia (hunger), tiredness, fluid volume deficit
Protocol for hyperglycemia
15/15 rule. Give 15 grams of carbohydrate, waite 15 minutes and recheck the blood sugar
DKA manifestations
Priority system assessment with unstable blood glucose
Neuromuscular assessment because with thick sugary syrup blood, the organs are not perfusing well.
Reduce caloric intake to about 1500 per day to lose weight
True
Activity/ exercise should be done how often during the week?
Most days of the week or 150 minutes per week
Three main causes of DKA
a. intentional or unintentional missed doses of insulin
b. inadequate insulin doses due to increased metabolic needs
c. new onset of Diabetes Type I
Treatment of DKA
- Fluid replacement with isotonic normal saline
- correction of electrolyte imbalance, focusing on monitoring and correction of decreased potassium level (hypokalemia), prior to insulin administration
- insulin administration
