Metabolism 12/11/24 Flashcards
amino acids:
molecules that are the building blocks of proteins
carbon dioxide
a molecule made of carbon and oxygen atoms
cellular respiration
the chemical reaction between oxygen and glucose that releases energy into cells
chemical reaction
A process in which atoms rearrange to form new substances
circulatory system
The body system that transports molecules to and from all cells of the body
claim
A proposed answer to a question about the natural world
digestive system
The body system that takes in food and breaks it down
Energy
The ability to make things move or change
Evidence
information about the natural world that is used to support or go against (refute) a claim
glucose
A molecule that organisms can use to release energy, and that is made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms
How does functioning body work well?
In a functioning human body, body systems work together to deliver glucose, oxygen, and amino acid molecules to the cells in the body.
Metabolism
The body’s use of molecules for energy and growth
molecule
A group of atoms joined together in a particular way
oxygen
A molecule that organisms get from the air or water around them and use to release energy
Proteins
A category of large molecules that perform important functions inside living things
Reasoning
The process of making clear how your evidence supports your claim
respiratory system
The body system that takes in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide
scientific argument
A claim supported by evidence
Starch
A type of energy storage molecule made of many glucose molecules connected together
System
a set of interacting parts forming a complex whole
What do cells need?
Cells need Oxygen from the air we breathe and Glucose and amino acids from the food we eat.
What is Protein?
Is found in foods such as meat, beans and eggs. Protein molecules are too big to enter the cell. They must be broken down into smaller particles called amino acids so they can enter the blood and then the cells.
What is Starch
Found in foods such as fruits, vegetables and grains (rice, potatoes, bread). Starch molecules are too big to fit into the cells. They need to be broken down into glucose so they are small enough to enter the blood and finally to the cell.
