Metabolic Rate Flashcards
Define the term ‘Metabolic Rate’?
The metabolic rate of a living organism refers to the speed with which energy is used up to survive.
How do we COMPARE metabolic rates?
- Measurement of oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide and heat production.
How do we MEASURE metabolic rates?
- Metabolic rates can be measured using respirometers, oxygen probes, carbon dioxide probes and calorimeters.
What do organisms with high metabolic rates require?
Organisms with high metabolic rates require more efficient delivery of oxygen to cells.
Describe the circulatory system within Birds and Mammals?
Birds and Mammals have a complete double circulatory system, consisting of two atria and two ventricle.
Describe the circulatory system within amphibians and reptiles?
Amphibians and most reptiles have a incomplete double circulatory system, consisting of two atria and one ventricle.
Describe the circulatory system within Fish?
Fish have a single circulatory system consisting of one atrium and one ventricle.
Explain the complete double circulatory system?
Complete double circulatory systems enable higher metabolic rates, to be maintained. No mixing of deoxygenated blood and the oxygenated blood can be pumped out at a higher pressure. This enable more efficient oxygen delivery to cells
