Metabolic and Endocrine Flashcards

1
Q

Metabolic & Endocrine: Hormone Replacement Agents

A
  • Action
    • restore normal endocrine function when endogenous production of a particular hormone is deficient or absent
  • indications
    • decrese in endogenous hormone secretion
  • Side Effects
    • vary by exogenous or synthetic hormone therapy used for treatment
  • PT
    • be aware of signs of hormones deficit and hormone therapy
  • Examples
    • see specific categories

Q

Metabolic & Endocrine: Hyperfunction Agents

A
  • Actions
    • manage hyperactive endocrine fxn to allow inhibition of hormone fxn via neg feedback loops or hormone antagonists
  • Indications
    • hyperactive or excessive endocrine function
  • Side Effects
    • vary by hormone
  • PT
    • be aware of side effects and signs of hyperfunction

Q

Metabolic & Endocrine: Bone Mineral Regulating Agents

A
  • Actions
    • attempt to enhance and max bone mass along w/ preventing bone loss or rate of bone reabsorption
  • Indications
    • Paget’s dx, osteoporosis, hyperparathyroidism, rickets, hypoparathyroidism, osteo malacia
  • Side Effects
    • agent dependent, GI distress, dyspepsia, dysphagia, anorexia, bone pain, arrhythmia
  • PT
    • pts w/ deficit are at risk for fracture and side effects from drug therapy. attempt WB activities to promote bone health
  • Examples
    • Estrogens: Premarin
    • calcium and vit D: calc carbonate (tums), calderol (calcifediol),
    • biphosphonates: fosamax (alendronate sodium), Boniva (ibandronate)
    • calcitonin: cibacalcin (human calcitonin)
